When and how can I contact my child's teacher? Please feel free to contact us with questions or concerns anytime! The phone number to JWS is 514-6466. Though you may call anytime, we are hard at work teaching our wonderful students and do have the most time to speak with you during our support time and before and after school hours. You may also email us anytime using our email links on the home page!
What is the homework policy? Students will likely have homework Monday-Thursday. Often times on Thursday, the homework assignment is to study for math, science or vocabulary tests. Students should take their toolkits and composition books home nightly for studying purposes. Although there is typically no homework over the weekend, it is an expectation that students will read for 30 minutes. We understand that things come up and families are very busy after school, so homework can't always be completed. If ever there is a night that homework can not be completed, it is possible that the student can be excused from the assignment and/or may complete it another time. As long as incomplete homework isn't a regular practice, all that we need to excuse the student is a note written and signed by their parent (brought in the morning of and in place of the missing assignment).
What is the blue folder and when is it sent home? Blue folders are a very important source of communication between home and school! Blue folders are sent home every Tuesday night and are due back to school the next day. We ask for parents to review the completed papers and sign and return any necessary forms. Important forms, student work, and all graded papers are sent home in the blue folder.
How much should my child be reading? It is a Craven County Schools expectation that each student will read for 30 minutes a night. We try to have fun celebrations and rewards for students who achieve their reading goals!
Can I eat lunch with my child? Sure, anytime! Our lunch time is from 12:32-1:00. Just make sure to sign in at the office!
How can my child improve their grades? Students are usually offered the opportunity each week to improve their grade! As tests go home in the blue folder on Tuesdays, students are usually offered a chance to make detailed corrections using their notes, books, etc that night. All corrections that are turned in on Wednesday morning are reviewed by the teacher and partial credit is added back to the student's grade for each corrected answer!
